An important center in the ancient world with a port since then virtually unchanged, Kos is the third-largest of the Dodecanese islands and the second most popular tourist destination of the island group.
It is also among its most fertile and is fringed with sandy beaches. Kos Town, the main port and capital of the island, is a gentle wide-avenued center of flowers and trees with a distinctly Italian feel.
Kos is also the birthplace of Hippocrates, the ‘father of modern medicine' and the location of The Asclepion, site of the Hippocratic school and sanatorium.
